The famed Waterloo Medals, awarded to officers and soldiers who participated in one or more of the final battles of the Napoleonic Wars (at Ligny, Quatre Bras and Waterloo itself), were originally intended to be produced in bronzed copper, which saw the output of patterns medals such as this one. Before the issue was completed, however, George IV changed his mind about the metal, and the actual medals awarded to the troops were struck in silver instead.
